FOCUS: Focus on your child, not others

Note: This is the second article in our series around our travel philosophy, Be F.L.E.X.I.B.L.E. In this article, we breakdown what F in Be F.L.E.X.I.B.L.E. stands for. If you want to first get an overview on Be F.L.E.X.I.B.L.E. itself, please click here.

When it comes to traveling with children, stay focused on your child and not about disrupting others. Yes, we have boarded planes to “oh, no, they have a toddler” look, and we have had tour guides tell us strollers are not the best for their tours. Our focus remains on Aarav and if he gets cranky on a plane, we don’t worry about how strangers feel about his crying. We worry about our son and what is making him cry and how we can make him feel better.

When were told a stroller could slow things up on a tour in Vatican City, we brought it anyway, knowing it would be easier on our son to rest and sleep, should he need to, and we would be the ones to slow down and do the work if there were too many stairs. Aarav did, in fact, fall asleep, and it actually made it easier for us to move through the crowds having a stroller to push through them! We did what was best for our son and us, and didn’t worry about the tour guide.

We have received the looks from people in lines at security and in the plane, dealt with tantrums in the midst fellow travelers but we learned to stayed focused on our child and will share the same tips with you in our book, How To Travel With Kids (Without Losing Your Mind).
